Senneh and Bijar carpets are two distinguished types of Persian rugs from Kurdish regions in western Iran, known for their exceptional craftsmanship and durability.

Senneh rugs, woven in the city of Sanandaj (formerly Senneh), are fine and lightweight, with a tight weave and often feature the Herati pattern—a diamond lattice with floral motifs. They use the asymmetrical (Persian) knot and are prized for their elegance and intricate design, often in smaller sizes like mats or runners.

Bijar rugs, from the nearby town of Bijar, are much heavier and denser, famously called the “iron rugs of Persia” due to their toughness. They use a double-wefted technique with a very compact weave, making them extremely durable. Designs include medallions, floral fields, and geometric motifs, typically in deep reds, blues, and ivory.

Both styles reflect Kurdish weaving traditions, but differ in weight, structure, and purpose—Senneh for finesse, Bijar for strength.

EVERY DESIGN IS UNIQUE

Due to their handcrafted nature, the pattern on our Persian Rugs may show slight imperfections, which are a hallmark of traditional weaving techniques and a sign of its authenticity and craftsmanship.

NATURAL 100% WOOL OR NATURAL FIBRES

All our Persian rugs and carpets are made with 100% wool from sheep or goats belonging to pastoral nomads who inhabit the Zargos Mountain Range in Iran. The flocks are herded during the spring months to the cooler climates of the high mountain plateaus and valleys, where the grass is abundant and rich in minerals. The fleeces grow thick and produce a lustrous wool, fine in texture and when spun, using many natural dyes, which have a high colour saturation.

PROFESSIONALLY CLEANED

All our rugs and carpets are professionally cleaned before we place them on sale in our Narberth showroom.
