Frequently Asked Questions
Are your Persian rugs and carpets authentic?
Absolutely. Every piece in our collection is a genuine, hand-knotted tribal rug. We specialize in vintage and nomadic pieces from the Zagros Mountain region. Unlike machine-made alternatives, our rugs are woven by hand using traditional techniques passed down through generations of Kurd, Lur, Bakhtiari, and Qashqai weavers.
How can I tell if a rug is hand-knotted?
The best way to tell is by looking at the underside. On a hand-knotted Persian carpet, the pattern should be almost as clear on the back as it is on the front. You will also see slight irregularities in the knots, which are the hallmark of a human hand rather than a machine. We are always happy to show you these details in our Narberth showroom.
What makes “nomadic” wool different?
The wool used in our rugs comes from high-altitude flocks. Because the sheep live in cooler climates, they produce a thicker, more “lustrous” wool that is rich in natural oils (lanolin). This makes the finished carpet incredibly durable and naturally stain-resistant.
Do you use natural dyes?
Most of our vintage tribal rugs are colored using natural, vegetable-based dyes. These dyes create a beautiful depth of color and a characteristic known as “abrash”—subtle variations in shade that give the rug its unique, soulful character.
Why are there variations in the pattern and colour?
One of the most beautiful aspects of an authentic tribal rug is its uniqueness. Because these are hand-woven by nomadic artisans—not machines—no two pieces are ever identical. You may notice slight variations in the weave or “abrash” (subtle shifts in dye shades). These are not flaws; they are the “fingerprints” of the weaver and evidence of a genuine, hand-knotted work of art. If you are looking for a soul-less, uniform carpet, a machine-made rug is an option—but if you want a piece with character and history, these variations are what make it special.
How are your rugs sourced?
Ethical integrity is at the heart of what we do. We source our rugs directly from the tribal communities and families who weave them in the Zagros Mountains. By bypassing mass-market middlemen, we ensure that a fair price goes directly to the artisans, supporting the continued survival of these ancient weaving traditions. When you buy from us, you are investing in a sustainable, ethically sourced product that supports remote mountain livelihoods.
Are the rugs professionally cleaned before sale?
Yes, every piece in our collection undergoes a meticulous professional cleaning process before it reaches our showroom. Because we specialize in vintage Persian carpets, we use traditional, deep-cleaning methods that are gentle on the hand-spun wool and natural dyes. You can be confident that your rug is hygienic, refreshed, and ready to be placed in your home immediately.
Do you offer online sales and delivery?
We are not currently selling our carpets online but we do encourage you to come and visit us at our Narberth showroom in Wales.
How do I care for a vintage wool rug?
Wool is incredibly resilient. Regular vacuuming (without a harsh beater bar) and rotating the rug once a year to ensure even wear is usually all that’s needed. For spills, we recommend blotting immediately with lukewarm water—never use harsh chemicals on natural dyes.
