Sarouk Carpet 330 x 230 cm

Sarouk carpets originate from the historic village of Sarouk, located approximately twenty miles north of Arak (formerly Sultanabad) in the renowned Markazi Province of central Iran, where local artisans established one of the most celebrated weaving traditions in Persian carpet history. These “hand-knotted Persian Sarouk or Sarough rugs are very attractive and are considered one of the highest quality rugs originating from the well established Arak weaving district”, with production flourishing “for much of the twentieth century” with “early successes largely owed to the American market”. The region’s strategic position within the broader Arak weaving district allowed Sarouk artisans to develop their distinctive aesthetic that perfectly balanced traditional Persian motifs with sophisticated design sensibilities.

In Iran, “Sarouk denotes romance, and this mood is reflected in the design of Sarouk rugs: a stunning fusion of angular floral patterns (with or without a central medallion)”. These exceptional carpets are characterised by their intricate floral designs featuring elaborate palmettes, vine scrolls, and garden motifs executed with remarkable precision and artistic refinement.

The traditional colour palette emphasises rich burgundy, deep navy blue, and warm rose tones that create the romantic aesthetic for which Sarouk carpets are renowned. The weavers employ the Persian asymmetrical knot on cotton foundations with lustrous wool pile that provides exceptional durability and visual depth. These carpets are “known for their intricate and folk designs, vibrant colours, and high-quality mountain wool” and are “made using traditional Iranian methods”. Each Sarouk carpet represents the pinnacle of Persian weaving artistry, combining technical excellence with sophisticated design to create pieces that have captivated collectors worldwide for over a century.

EVERY DESIGN IS UNIQUE

Due to their handcrafted nature, the pattern on our Persian Rugs may show slight imperfections, which are a hallmark of traditional weaving techniques and a sign of its authenticity and craftsmanship.

NATURAL 100% WOOL

All our Persian rugs and carpets are made with 100% wool from sheep or goats belonging to pastoral nomads who inhabit the Zargos Mountain Range in Iran. The flocks are herded during the spring months to the cooler climates of the high mountain plateaus and valleys where the grass is abundant and rich in minerals. The fleeces grow thick and produce a lustrous wool, fine in texture, and when spun and using many natural dyes, have a high colour saturation.

PROFESSIONALLY CLEANED

All our Tribal Rugs are professionally cleaned before sale to ensure they are of the highest cleanliness and quality before we place them on sale in our Narberth showroom.
