Oushak carpets (also spelled Uşak) are prestigious handwoven rugs originating from the town of Uşak in western Turkey. Renowned for their large-scale designs, soft colour palettes, and luxurious wool, Oushak carpets have been highly prized in Europe and the Middle East since the 15th century, especially by royalty and aristocrats.

These rugs typically feature large central medallions, star motifs, or floral arabesques, with spacious, flowing compositions. Unlike many Persian rugs, Oushaks emphasise open fields and subtle elegance over dense ornamentation. Common colours include soft golds, pale blues, salmon pinks, ivories, and sage greens, often created using natural vegetable dyes.

Woven with the Turkish (symmetrical) knot, Oushak carpets usually have a wool foundation or occasionally cotton, with a lustrous wool pile that is soft underfoot. Though not densely knotted, their coarse weave adds to their distinct character and visual warmth.

Oushak rugs are often made in large room sizes, making them ideal for grand interiors, both classic and contemporary. Their timeless, understated beauty and historical significance have made them a staple in luxury interior design and a favourite among collectors and decorators worldwide.
