The ancient city of Nahavand translates into “the city where pots are made” and its history can be traced back to 300 BCE. Back in those days of antiquity no doubt  basic floor coverings would have been in existance which have evolved over the mellina into carpets of quality and exceptional durability, using local sheep wool prized for strength and softness, incorporating traditional dyes and  minerals. The central medallion in this carpet reflects the pattern of the agricultural irrigation systems used in the surrounding countryside,  channeling water from the nearby mountains bordering the city to the fruit farms, which are major contributors to the rich fertile landscape reflected in the colours and designs of these splendid carpets.

Surrounding the medallion is a dense scattering of geometric floral forms, angular blossoms, and symbolic motifs typical of the Nahavand weaving tradition. These shapes appear almost mosaic-like, with small squares, crosses, and rosette elements interlocking across the field. Shades of rust red, brick, ochre, denim blue, and muted rose create a layered, earthy palette that feels both traditional and warm.

The broad border frames the piece beautifully, featuring repeating tribal elements in red and blue that anchor the intricate central field. Subtle abrash (natural colour variation in the wool) adds character and authenticity, giving the carpet a softly weathered, lived-in look that reflects its handwoven origins. While the rug shows signs of age typical of older village pieces, these contribute to its charm and uniqueness.

Overall, this Nahavand carpet has a wonderfully bold, rhythmic composition with a strong central presence and richly detailed surroundings. Its deep, warm colours and confident tribal design make it an ideal statement piece for interiors seeking authenticity, craftsmanship, and timeless Persian character. Perfect for adding depth and warmth to living rooms, studies, or eclectic spaces, this is a distinctive handwoven rug with real visual impact.

EVERY DESIGN IS UNIQUE

Due to their handcrafted nature, the pattern on our Persian Rugs may show slight imperfections, which are a hallmark of traditional weaving techniques and a sign of its authenticity and craftsmanship.

NATURAL 100% WOOL OR NATURAL FIBRES

All our Persian rugs and carpets are made with 100% wool from sheep or goats belonging to pastoral nomads who inhabit the Zargos Mountain Range in Iran. The flocks are herded during the spring months to the cooler climates of the high mountain plateaus and valleys, where the grass is abundant and rich in minerals. The fleeces grow thick and produce a lustrous wool, fine in texture and when spun, using many natural dyes, which have a high colour saturation.

PROFESSIONALLY CLEANED

All our rugs and carpets are professionally cleaned before we place them on sale in our Narberth showroom.
