Malayer Runner 366 x 79 cm

Originating from the historic city of Malayer in western Iran’s Hamadan province, these exquisite carpets represent centuries of refined weaving tradition that flourished during the Seljuk and Safavid dynasties. Malayer is a large village located between the major weaving areas of Hamadan and Sarouk in Northwest Persia, where production was almost exclusively small antique rugs and runners made by individual weavers in the 19th and early 20th-centuries. The region’s strategic position as an important economic trade route through the centuries exposed local artisans to diverse cultural influences, resulting in a vast repertoire of designs that make these carpets highly prized by collectors worldwide.

Malayer carpets are distinguished by their single-weft and the use of the symmetrical knot, featuring a cotton foundation with a low-cut wool pile that creates their characteristic refined appearance. Malayer rugs typically feature intricate geometric patterns, often with a dominant central medallion surrounded by detailed borders. Common motifs include the Herati (fish) motif, boteh (a symbol resembling a teardrop or leaf), and various stylised floral and animal designs. The tribal weavers in Malayer were often Turkish, and they employed the Turkish knot, Gourde, contributing to the distinctive structural integrity and longevity that makes authentic Malayer carpets treasured heirloom pieces that embody the artistic heritage of Persian craftsmanship.

This Malayer runner has a strong dark blue predominant colour with a vibrant red border.

EVERY DESIGN IS UNIQUE

Due to their handcrafted nature, the pattern on our Persian Rugs may show slight imperfections, which are a hallmark of traditional weaving techniques and a sign of its authenticity and craftsmanship.

NATURAL 100% WOOL

All our Persian rugs and carpets are made with 100% wool from sheep or goats belonging to pastoral nomads who inhabit the Zargos Mountain Range in Iran. The flocks are herded during the spring months to the cooler climates of the high mountain plateaus and valleys where the grass is abundant and rich in minerals. The fleeces grow thick and produce a lustrous wool, fine in texture, and when spun and using many natural dyes, have a high colour saturation.

PROFESSIONALLY CLEANED

All our Tribal Rugs are professionally cleaned before sale to ensure they are of the highest cleanliness and quality before we place them on sale in our Narberth showroom.
