Mahal carpets originate from the historic weaving region around the town of Mahal in central Iran, where these rugs are in high demand for their spacious allover designs, coveted for their versatility and casual elegance by interior designers and connoisseurs. This renowned weaving centre, situated in the Arak district, became particularly prominent during the 19th and early 20th centuries when local weavers developed their distinctive style that balanced traditional Persian motifs with more relaxed, village-style execution. The region’s strategic location between major Persian weaving centres allowed Mahal artisans to draw inspiration from various traditions whilst developing their own unique aesthetic approach.

Mahal rugs are amongst the most highly desired carpets for their glowing ivory to beige backgrounds that feature detailed motifs. Both Turkish and Persian knots are used by the weavers while making a Mahal rug. These exceptional pieces are characterised by their spacious designs that often feature large-scale floral patterns, palmettes, and vine scrolls executed with a charming informality that distinguishes them from more formal Persian court carpets.

The traditional colour palette emphasises warm ivory and beige grounds accented with soft blues, roses, and gold tones that create an elegant yet approachable aesthetic. The rugs are woven using asymmetrical Persian knots to tie each loop one by one, typically on cotton foundations with wool pile that provides excellent durability. Mahal carpets represent the perfect synthesis of Persian artistic heritage with village-style craftsmanship, creating pieces that offer both historical significance and contemporary versatility for modern interiors.

EVERY DESIGN IS UNIQUE

Due to their handcrafted nature, the pattern on our Persian Rugs may show slight imperfections, which are a hallmark of traditional weaving techniques and a sign of its authenticity and craftsmanship.

NATURAL 100% WOOL OR NATURAL FIBRES

All our Persian rugs and carpets are made with 100% wool from sheep or goats belonging to pastoral nomads who inhabit the Zargos Mountain Range in Iran. The flocks are herded during the spring months to the cooler climates of the high mountain plateaus and valleys, where the grass is abundant and rich in minerals. The fleeces grow thick and produce a lustrous wool, fine in texture and when spun, using many natural dyes, which have a high colour saturation.

PROFESSIONALLY CLEANED

All our rugs and carpets are professionally cleaned before we place them on sale in our Narberth showroom.
