This lovely Lur carpet is dated 1387/1388  on the left side of the medallion. Making it 18 years old. -2007. It is a dowery piece woven by the bride to be and possibly family members  mother sisters etc. It is full of protection symbols stylized botehs to the corner spandrels, longevity to the sides and top and bottom cartouche. On both sides internal and external arrows to keep evil out and goodness in. Same symbols on either side of the medallion. Octagonal palmettes (flowers) in abundance throughout the main field. Eight is a magic number for protection. Hairband symbols in the medallion again protection and good luck. Small yellow and white flowers gul hinny, henna. For joy and harmony also temple lamps at the top and bottom of the medallion welcoming guests to the hearth.

This striking Lur carpet is a superb example of the bold, expressive weaving traditions of the Luri tribes of western Iran. Dominated by a rich, brick-red field, the design centres around a dramatic stepped medallion formed in deep indigo and warm chestnut tones. This central motif is filled with star-shaped tribal flowers, each knotted in vibrant shades of saffron, green, ivory, and burnt orange, giving the rug a lively and rhythmic composition.

Surrounding the medallion is a beautifully arranged scattering of geometric motifs – small crosses, angular blossoms, protective symbols, and stylised plant forms – all rendered in strong contrasting colours that stand out brilliantly against the red ground. The overall design feels both structured and dynamic, capturing the confident, imaginative character typical of Luri village work.

At the top and bottom of the rug, large arrow-like motifs in emerald green and dark rose add visual weight and balance, echoing traditional tribal symbolism. The crenellated, zig-zag outlines of the central medallion contribute a sense of movement, guiding the eye up and down the piece.

A narrow yet richly decorated border frames the composition, combining midnight blue with warm reds and russet tones to anchor the design. Subtle abrash (natural colour variations in the wool) enhances the handmade quality and gives the rug depth and authenticity.

With its vibrant palette, strong tribal geometry, and engaging folk motifs, this Lur rug makes a distinctive and characterful statement. Ideal for adding warmth, personality, and cultural richness to living spaces, studies, or eclectic interiors, it is a fine example of traditional Persian tribal craftsmanship.

EVERY DESIGN IS UNIQUE

Due to their handcrafted nature, the pattern on our Persian Rugs may show slight imperfections, which are a hallmark of traditional weaving techniques and a sign of its authenticity and craftsmanship.

NATURAL 100% WOOL OR NATURAL FIBRES

All our Persian rugs and carpets are made with 100% wool from sheep or goats belonging to pastoral nomads who inhabit the Zargos Mountain Range in Iran. The flocks are herded during the spring months to the cooler climates of the high mountain plateaus and valleys, where the grass is abundant and rich in minerals. The fleeces grow thick and produce a lustrous wool, fine in texture and when spun, using many natural dyes, which have a high colour saturation.

PROFESSIONALLY CLEANED

All our rugs and carpets are professionally cleaned before we place them on sale in our Narberth showroom.
