This beautiful carpet was woven by the ladies of the Lur tribe of Iran and, as in many Persian carpets, depicts a garden as a sacred place of peace. Represented by the three slender medallion images with floral palmetts. It is the embodiment of the feminine, the powerful ancient Iranian goddess of water, fertility, wisdom and healing. Annahita. The black centre medallion represents the deep space of night.
This carpet was probably woven in a mountain village where there is little or no intrusion of city lights and the firmament is fully visible. The upper and lower green medallions are daytime flowering flora. Placed on either side of the medallions are the vertical trees of life with balanced flowers with sparkling, bejewelled raindrops.
The warm red field contains a random pattern of palmettes, creating a spacious feeling of space and harmony. The four white corner spandrels hold the main field, while the whole main carpet is surrounded by a protective mountain pattern known in Persian as Medakhel,” to ward off evil eyes”.
This carpet is an exceptional work of tribal weaving using natural dyes and handspun wool. It was probably woven over the course of a year beginning after the Spring shearing, and completed by the following Spring. This can be seen in the different dying batches of wool (Abrash) woven as the seasons progress. It would have been used in a domestic situation by the family who made it and passed on over time as its circumstances dictate.
Its condition is perfect, owing to no shoes being worn in its location and it is probably 30 /40 years old.

EVERY DESIGN IS UNIQUE
Due to their handcrafted nature, the pattern on our Persian Rugs may show slight imperfections, which are a hallmark of traditional weaving techniques and a sign of its authenticity and craftsmanship.
NATURAL 100% WOOL OR NATURAL FIBRES
All our Persian rugs and carpets are made with 100% wool from sheep or goats belonging to pastoral nomads who inhabit the Zargos Mountain Range in Iran. The flocks are herded during the spring months to the cooler climates of the high mountain plateaus and valleys, where the grass is abundant and rich in minerals. The fleeces grow thick and produce a lustrous wool, fine in texture and when spun, using many natural dyes, which have a high colour saturation.
PROFESSIONALLY CLEANED
All our rugs and carpets are professionally cleaned before we place them on sale in our Narberth showroom.
