Lilihan Carpet 417 X 312 cm

Lilihan carpets represent one of Persia’s most distinctive weaving traditions, created by Armenian artisans who settled in the village of Lilihan in the Kamareh district (now Khomeyn) of western Iran during the 17th century. These skilled Persian-Armenian weavers established their craft in this region south of Arak province, developing a unique style that beautifully merged Armenian technical expertise with classical Persian design sensibilities. The cultural synthesis created by this Armenian community resulted in carpets that became particularly cherished in international markets, especially in America during the Victorian era, where their ornate aesthetic perfectly complemented the period’s decorative preferences.

Lilihan rugs are meticulously executed using the robust Hamadan single-wefted weave with symmetrical Turkish knots, typically featuring one heavy cotton weft and constructed with thick, first-quality wool that ensures exceptional longevity. These carpets are distinguished by their ornate floral designs showcasing classical Persian motifs with detached floral sprays, often incorporating geometric patterns executed in sophisticated colour combinations.

Pink traditionally dominates the palette, alongside rose, salmon, and coral tones achieved through both natural and early synthetic dyes. The longer pile construction historically appealed to Western preferences, whilst the intricate patterns demonstrate the remarkable skill of Armenian weavers who preserved their ancient techniques whilst adapting to Persian artistic traditions. These exquisite pieces represent a unique chapter in Persian carpet history, embodying the multicultural heritage of Iran’s diverse weaving communities.

This Lilihan carpet has a large diamond section with intricate patterns and colours with a leaf or plant-based theme. It has a deep orange-red colour with a pale pink diamond interior.

EVERY DESIGN IS UNIQUE

Due to their handcrafted nature, the pattern on our Persian Rugs may show slight imperfections, which are a hallmark of traditional weaving techniques and a sign of its authenticity and craftsmanship.

NATURAL 100% WOOL

All our Persian rugs and carpets are made with 100% wool from sheep or goats belonging to pastoral nomads who inhabit the Zargos Mountain Range in Iran. The flocks are herded during the spring months to the cooler climates of the high mountain plateaus and valleys where the grass is abundant and rich in minerals. The fleeces grow thick and produce a lustrous wool, fine in texture, and when spun and using many natural dyes, have a high colour saturation.

PROFESSIONALLY CLEANED

All our Tribal Rugs are professionally cleaned before sale to ensure they are of the highest cleanliness and quality before we place them on sale in our Narberth showroom.
