Kolaye carpets (also spelt Kolyai or Kolyaei) are tribal rugs woven by Kurdish weavers in the Kermanshah Province of western Iran, particularly in the Kolyaei region. These rugs are known for their bold, geometric designs, durable construction, and rich, earthy colours.
Kolaye rugs typically feature large-scale medallions, stepped diamonds, or repeated lozenge motifs, often framed by wide borders with stylised floral or abstract patterns. The colour palette leans toward deep reds, navy blues, ivory, and rust tones, created with natural dyes.
Woven using the Turkish (symmetrical) knot, Kolaye carpets are sturdy and have a medium to heavy pile, making them highly suitable for everyday use. They are mostly produced in long runner formats, ideal for hallways or narrow rooms.
Kolaye carpets reflect authentic Kurdish tribal aesthetics, combining functionality with bold artistic expression. While less refined than city rugs, they are prized for their rugged beauty and genuine folk character.
This Kolaye carpet has a deep blue / indigo colour with a strikingly contrasting red central motif.

NATURAL 100% WOOL
All our Persian rugs and carpets are made with 100% wool from sheep or goats belonging to pastoral nomads who inhabit the Zargos Mountain Range in Iran. The flocks are herded during the spring months to the cooler climates of the high mountain plateaus and valleys where the grass is abundant and rich in minerals. The fleeces grow thick and produce a lustrous wool, fine in texture, and when spun and using many natural dyes, have a high colour saturation.
