This unique tribal afshar carpet was made in two separate lenghts stiched together upon completion probably due to the fact that the size of the dwelling space was limited and also the complexity of the design. The powerfull central medallion is composed of concentric layers of steped diamond motifs, woven as octagionally shaped stars with highlighted white surrounds. The intensity of the medallion is bought to a living creshendo in the forms of vertical white stars surrounded in deep sky blue. This detailed firmanent represents the absolute clarity of the night sky of southern persia. The central field is dominated by deep, rich hues of red, maroon, and brown, accented by touches of blue and cream. The pattern exhibits intricate detailing, typical of handwoven tribal or village rugs. Surrounding the entire carpet borders as well as the central field are a series of protected borders, known as medakhel that offer the the ladies who are engaged in the weaving process protection from the evil eye. visual complexity and balance is achieved by the four corner spandrells.

Afshar Carpet
The Afshar carpets originate from the renowned Persian nomadic tribe that has inhabited various regions throughout Iran since the 14th century, with the largest and most prominent group settled in Kerman province. These skilled weavers, believed to be related to ancient Kurdish nomads, were forced to migrate during the conflicts between the Ottoman and Safavid Empires in the 15th century, eventually establishing themselves as master craftsmen in southern Persia. Despite their decline from being the preeminent Persian tribal group to occupying primarily the southeast corner of Iran by the twentieth century, their Turkish dialect and weaving traditions point to origins in Azerbaijan or East Turkey.
Afshar rugs are distinguished by their masterful use of both Persian (asymmetrical) and Turkish (symmetrical) knotting techniques, typically woven on horizontal looms using hand-spun wool for both the pile and foundation. The carpets feature bold geometric patterns, often incorporating stylized animal motifs, floral designs, and distinctive tribal symbols that reflect their nomadic heritage. The color palette traditionally includes deep reds, rich blues, and warm earth tones achieved through natural dyes. These durable carpets embody the artistic legacy of one of Persia’s most historically significant tribal groups, making them highly sought after by collectors worldwide for their authentic nomadic character.
EVERY DESIGN IS UNIQUE
Due to their handcrafted nature, the pattern on our Persian Rugs may show slight imperfections, which are a hallmark of traditional weaving techniques and a sign of its authenticity and craftsmanship.
NATURAL 100% WOOL OR NATURAL FIBRES
All our Persian rugs and carpets are made with 100% wool from sheep or goats belonging to pastoral nomads who inhabit the Zargos Mountain Range in Iran. The flocks are herded during the spring months to the cooler climates of the high mountain plateaus and valleys, where the grass is abundant and rich in minerals. The fleeces grow thick and produce a lustrous wool, fine in texture and when spun, using many natural dyes, which have a high colour saturation.
PROFESSIONALLY CLEANED
All our rugs and carpets are professionally cleaned before we place them on sale in our Narberth showroom.
