Afghan Rug 309 x 205 cm
£2,250.00
This Afghan rug has a warm madder-red ground, laid out with rows of large octagonal guls, the classic “elephant’s foot” motif. Each gul is quartered in deep navy and rich brown, with a stepped diamond and small hooked motifs at its centre, giving a strong, rhythmic pattern across the field. Between the rows sit small navy cross-shaped minor guls, adding a lighter, more delicate touch to the bold layout.
The palette is deep and earthy: madder red, indigo blue, dark chocolate brown and touches of rust, the colour combination that Afghan rugs are known and loved for. The navy has a lovely slight variation in tone (abrash), a sign of hand-spun wool and natural character.
The rug is framed by several borders, with the widest carrying a repeating lattice of small red crosses on a navy ground, flanked by narrow stripes in red, blue and brown with fine geometric detail. The layered borders give it a strong, well-defined edge.
The pile is soft and velvety with a natural sheen, and the colours have mellowed nicely. Its bold, geometric design suits both traditional and modern interiors, and it would look great in a living room, study or bedroom.
About Afghan rugs
Afghan rugs are woven mainly in northern Afghanistan by Turkmen weaving communities, who have passed their designs down through generations. They’re hand-knotted with a hard-wearing wool pile, and are best known for their deep red grounds and rows of large octagonal guls, often called “elephant’s foot” designs, in navy, brown and black. Each tribal group has its own guls and border patterns, so every rug carries a little of its weavers’ heritage. Strong, practical and full of character, Afghan rugs are among the most durable and versatile rugs you can own.

EVERY DESIGN IS UNIQUE
Due to their handcrafted nature, the pattern on our Persian Rugs may show slight imperfections, which are a hallmark of traditional weaving techniques and a sign of its authenticity and craftsmanship.
NATURAL 100% WOOL OR NATURAL FIBRES
All our Persian rugs and carpets are made with 100% wool from sheep or goats belonging to pastoral nomads who inhabit the Zargos Mountain Range in Iran. The flocks are herded during the spring months to the cooler climates of the high mountain plateaus and valleys, where the grass is abundant and rich in minerals. The fleeces grow thick and produce a lustrous wool, fine in texture and when spun, using many natural dyes, which have a high colour saturation.
PROFESSIONALLY CLEANED
All our rugs and carpets are professionally cleaned before we place them on sale in our Narberth showroom.
