Nanaj Carpet 420 x 184 cm
Nanaj carpets originate from the remote village of Nanaj in the mountainous regions of western Iran, where a small community of skilled artisans has maintained their traditional weaving practices for generations within the broader context of Persian tribal carpet production. This isolated location in the Zagros Mountains has allowed the Nanaj weavers to preserve their distinctive techniques and design traditions with remarkable authenticity, creating pieces that reflect the pure essence of rural Persian craftsmanship. The village’s remote setting has fostered a weaving tradition that remains largely unchanged from historical practices, resulting in carpets that embody the authentic spirit of traditional Persian tribal artistry.
Nanaj carpets are characterised by their exceptional handcrafted quality and distinctive tribal aesthetic, typically featuring wool pile on wool foundations with medium knot density that creates remarkably durable pieces. The weavers employ traditional symmetrical Turkish knots, reflecting historical connections to nomadic tribes whilst maintaining distinctly Persian design sensibilities. Common motifs include geometric patterns, stylised floral elements, and tribal symbols that often incorporate ancient Persian decorative traditions passed down through generations of village artisans.
The colour palette traditionally features rich burgundy, deep navy, and warm earth tones achieved through natural dyes derived from local plants and minerals. These carpets frequently display the characteristic irregularities and variations that mark authentic village weaving, creating pieces with remarkable individual character that appeal to collectors seeking genuine tribal Persian carpets. Each Nanaj carpet represents a precious link to Iran’s village weaving heritage and the dedicated artisans who continue these ancient traditions.

EVERY DESIGN IS UNIQUE
Due to their handcrafted nature, the pattern on our Persian Rugs may show slight imperfections, which are a hallmark of traditional weaving techniques and a sign of its authenticity and craftsmanship.
NATURAL 100% WOOL
All our Persian rugs and carpets are made with 100% wool from sheep or goats belonging to pastoral nomads who inhabit the Zargos Mountain Range in Iran. The flocks are herded during the spring months to the cooler climates of the high mountain plateaus and valleys where the grass is abundant and rich in minerals. The fleeces grow thick and produce a lustrous wool, fine in texture, and when spun and using many natural dyes, have a high colour saturation.
PROFESSIONALLY CLEANED
All our Tribal Rugs are professionally cleaned before sale to ensure they are of the highest cleanliness and quality before we place them on sale in our Narberth showroom.
