A strong patterned runner with good saturated colours, from the weavers of Luristan (or Lorestan).

Luristan carpets originate from one of Iran’s most ancient and distinguished weaving regions, with carpet weaving being widespread throughout Luristan province and considered one of the leading weaving centres, with a history dating back thousands of years in Iran. Located in the rugged Zagros Mountains of western Iran, Luristan has served as a crossroads of ancient civilisations and trade routes, where the indigenous Lur people developed their distinctive weaving traditions amidst a landscape of dramatic valleys and nomadic pastoral culture. This mountainous region’s strategic position has fostered centuries of cultural exchange, resulting in carpets that reflect both ancient tribal heritage and sophisticated artistic influences from neighbouring Persian centres.

Luristan carpets are renowned for their bold geometric designs and exceptional construction quality, typically featuring wool pile on cotton foundations with medium to high knot density that ensures remarkable durability. The weavers employ both symmetrical and asymmetrical knotting techniques, depending on local traditions and tribal affiliations within the region.

Design motifs often include stylised animals, geometric medallions, and tribal symbols that reflect the nomadic heritage of the Lur people, executed in rich colour palettes dominated by deep burgundy, navy blue, and warm earth tones achieved through traditional natural dyes. These carpets frequently display a distinctive rustic character that appeals to collectors seeking authentic tribal pieces, whilst maintaining the technical excellence that has made Luristan one of Iran’s most respected weaving provinces. Each piece embodies the enduring spirit of mountain nomadism and represents centuries of unbroken weaving tradition.

EVERY DESIGN IS UNIQUE

Due to their handcrafted nature, the pattern on our Persian Rugs may show slight imperfections, which are a hallmark of traditional weaving techniques and a sign of its authenticity and craftsmanship.

NATURAL 100% WOOL OR NATURAL FIBRES

All our Persian rugs and carpets are made with 100% wool from sheep or goats belonging to pastoral nomads who inhabit the Zargos Mountain Range in Iran. The flocks are herded during the spring months to the cooler climates of the high mountain plateaus and valleys, where the grass is abundant and rich in minerals. The fleeces grow thick and produce a lustrous wool, fine in texture and when spun, using many natural dyes, which have a high colour saturation.

PROFESSIONALLY CLEANED

All our rugs and carpets are professionally cleaned before we place them on sale in our Narberth showroom.
