Lur Rug 320 X 138 cm
Lur rugs are crafted by the ancient Lur people, an indigenous Iranian ethnic group who have inhabited the Zagros Mountains of western Iran for over three millennia, creating one of Persia’s most authentic and historically significant weaving traditions. The Lur tribes, related to the ancient Elamites and Kassites, developed their distinctive carpet-making techniques within the rugged mountain terrain of Luristan province, where their semi-nomadic lifestyle and pastoral culture profoundly influenced their artistic expression. These skilled artisans maintained their unique weaving traditions despite centuries of political upheaval and cultural change, preserving ancient techniques that reflect their deep connection to the mountainous landscape and nomadic heritage.
Lur carpets are characterised by their robust construction and distinctive tribal aesthetic, typically featuring wool pile on cotton or wool foundations with medium knot density that creates exceptionally durable pieces. The weavers employ traditional symmetrical Turkish knots, reflecting historical connections to Turkic tribes whilst maintaining distinctly Persian design sensibilities. Common motifs include stylised animals, geometric patterns, and tribal symbols that often incorporate elements from ancient Iranian mythology and shamanic traditions.
The colour palette traditionally features deep reds, rich browns, and navy blues achieved through natural dyes derived from local plants and minerals. These carpets frequently display a characteristic rustic charm that appeals to collectors seeking authentic tribal pieces, whilst their exceptional durability makes them practical choices for contemporary interiors. Each Lur carpet represents a tangible link to one of Iran’s most ancient peoples and their enduring artistic traditions.

EVERY DESIGN IS UNIQUE
Due to their handcrafted nature, the pattern on our Persian Rugs may show slight imperfections, which are a hallmark of traditional weaving techniques and a sign of its authenticity and craftsmanship.
NATURAL 100% WOOL
All our Persian rugs and carpets are made with 100% wool from sheep or goats belonging to pastoral nomads who inhabit the Zargos Mountain Range in Iran. The flocks are herded during the spring months to the cooler climates of the high mountain plateaus and valleys where the grass is abundant and rich in minerals. The fleeces grow thick and produce a lustrous wool, fine in texture, and when spun and using many natural dyes, have a high colour saturation.
PROFESSIONALLY CLEANED
All our Tribal Rugs are professionally cleaned before sale to ensure they are of the highest cleanliness and quality before we place them on sale in our Narberth showroom.
