Afshar Rug 177 x 127 cm
The Afshar rugs originate from the renowned Persian nomadic tribe that has inhabited various regions throughout Iran since the 14th century, with the largest and most prominent group settled in Kerman province. These skilled weavers, believed to be related to ancient Kurdish nomads, were forced to migrate during the conflicts between the Ottoman and Safavid Empires in the 15th century, eventually establishing themselves as master craftsmen in southern Persia. Despite their decline from being the preeminent Persian tribal group to occupying primarily the southeast corner of Iran by the twentieth century, their Turkish dialect and weaving traditions point to origins in Azerbaijan or East Turkey.
Afshar rugs are distinguished by their masterful use of both Persian (asymmetrical) and Turkish (symmetrical) knotting techniques, typically woven on horizontal looms using hand-spun wool for both the pile and foundation. The carpets feature bold geometric patterns, often incorporating stylized animal motifs, floral designs, and distinctive tribal symbols that reflect their nomadic heritage. The color palette traditionally includes deep reds, rich blues, and warm earth tones achieved through natural dyes. These durable carpets embody the artistic legacy of one of Persia’s most historically significant tribal groups, making them highly sought after by collectors worldwide for their authentic nomadic character and exceptional craftsmanship.
This carpet has a large diamond motif and has a deep red main colour with darker indigo blue in the diamond that has a beautiful detail of birds.
Afhshar carpets are dyed by shades of red and blue. These relative large oriental carpets are characterised by a field in the middle, which is filled with rosettes.

EVERY DESIGN IS UNIQUE
Due to their handcrafted nature, the pattern on our Persian Rugs may show slight imperfections, which are a hallmark of traditional weaving techniques and a sign of its authenticity and craftsmanship.
NATURAL 100% WOOL
All our Persian rugs and carpets are made with 100% wool from sheep or goats belonging to pastoral nomads who inhabit the Zargos Mountain Range in Iran. The flocks are herded during the spring months to the cooler climates of the high mountain plateaus and valleys where the grass is abundant and rich in minerals. The fleeces grow thick and produce a lustrous wool, fine in texture, and when spun and using many natural dyes, have a high colour saturation.
PROFESSIONALLY CLEANED
All our Tribal Rugs are professionally cleaned before sale to ensure they are of the highest cleanliness and quality before we place them on sale in our Narberth showroom.
